Mosquito Killer, 1/2 Acre

Mosquito Killer, 1/2 Acre Review

After perusing many reviews, we settled on the 1/2 acre Stinger. We live in rural north Florida with many trees and bushes around out 2/3 acre property. There is a swamp less than 1/2 mile away. In the summer the mosquitoes are thick - and after rains we actually jog from the house to the car to keep from getting devoured. And outdoor activity? Forget it. Five minutes and you suffering from acute blood loss. Part of the reason we opted to get SOMETHING, is that we have three rabbits an a large 20x20 enclosure and they just get feasted upon. When we come out to feed them, a cloud would be hanging around their heads immune to the buns'' feeble attempts to shoo them by shaking their ears.br /br /When we got the Stinger, we were slightly disappointment that there was no hard copy manual included - though one is available on-line. As it turns out, you don't really need the manual, set up is intuitive but, of course, I didn't know that without the manual to confirm what I was doing! There are instructions on set up placement, and one very reasonable caveat: Do not expect the Stinger to eliminate EVERY mosquito. We followed all instructions and use the optional octenol bait (I have no idea if it's helping or not) and encourage others to follow all instructions as well, since our results have been excellent.br /br /After set up and installation, there was no immediate effect (why should there be?), but after a day or two we noticed a definite decrease in mosquito presence. The clouds around our rabbits' heads had been reduced to a few buzzing stragglers. Oh, sure there are still mosquitoes - we live in the woods close to a swamp in North Florida! - but there are only a few and they are no longer the menace they used to be. After a rain, there is a sudden increase (no surprise), and it does take a day or two for the Stinger to knock the population back down again, but to expect more is simply unreasonable. The Stinger works by a steady reduction of the mosquito population, not by magic. This illustrates one of the most important instructions to follow: leave it on ALL the time, so that it can work the way it was designed to. If you follow the instructions, and your expectations are reasonable, you will be delighted with this product.

Poor Reliability means low quality parts or poor design - Chris P. Christensen -
My misquito killer lasted 3-months. My replacement showed up after misquito season is finished. Very, Very disappointed. I may store my replacement while I purchase citronella candles for use next season. Either low quality parts are used, or design flaw. Not recommended. Don't waste your money.

Kills more bulbs than mosquitos! - Marie P. - Southbury, CT
We have owned this exact product for 2 years and in that time have only used it 3 months per year. It has gone through seven, yes seven bulbs! We package and store it very well in the "off season" (no pun intended towards a product that actually repells bugs, get it? "OFF") Anyway, this thing has only been in use for 7 months total since purchasing it and has yet again killed another bulb. This last one only lasted 17 days!!!!!!!!!!!. We even unplug it if there is any type of inclement weather, which this year has been quite often. We called the manufacturer and Matt stated on 7-10-09 "the one year warrany is over so there is nothing we can do". This just agitated us even more, so after a lengthy conversation of disapproval, they sent us two complimentary replacement bulbs. Well, one lasted 17 days, I guess we'll see how long the second one lasts. This thing is a waste of money and to be completely honest, for all the cost and hastle it has not made any significant reduction in the mosquito population in our yard. The replacement bulbs, attractant cost and the unit itself have set us back at least 0.00. Totally not worth it. This thing is a waste of time. So, if you are seriously looking for a product that works, please look elsewhere. Oh, and by all means give them a call, you can reach Matt from Stinger Customer Service at 1-800-477-0457. You can tell them Jon and Marie from Southbury, CT said "hi". Please don't waste your time, your money could be better spent elsewhere.
